Gangneung Travel Guide 2026: 6 Best Places to Visit, Food & 2-Day Itinerary

If you want to escape Seoul and experience beautiful beaches, ocean-view cafés, traditional Korean culture and local food, Gangneung is one of the easiest destinations to recommend.

Located on South Korea’s east coast in Gangwon State, Gangneung has a completely different atmosphere from Seoul.

Instead of skyscrapers and crowded shopping districts, you will find long sandy beaches, pine forests, traditional Korean houses, seafood markets and cafés overlooking the East Sea.

Gangneung is also famous for coffee culture. Anmok Coffee Street has become one of Korea’s best-known café destinations, and enjoying a cup of coffee while looking at the ocean has become part of the Gangneung travel experience.

Another advantage is accessibility. Gangneung can be reached from Seoul relatively quickly, which makes it suitable for either a day trip or a 1–2 night getaway.

For a first visit, however, I recommend spending at least two days.

Here are six places I would include in my first Gangneung itinerary.

1. Gyeongpo Beach — Gangneung’s Most Famous Beach

Gangneung has several beaches, but Gyeongpo Beach is probably the best place to start.

The beach has a long sandy coastline facing the East Sea, with pine trees, hotels, cafés and restaurants nearby.

During summer, the area becomes one of the most popular beach destinations on Korea’s east coast.

But you do not have to visit in July or August.

Personally, I think spring and autumn can be even better if your goal is sightseeing rather than swimming. The weather is cooler, the beach is less crowded and you can enjoy a much quieter walk beside the sea.

Gyeongpo Beach can also be combined with nearby Gyeongpo Lake.

Instead of spending only 20 minutes taking photos of the beach, walk around the surrounding area and enjoy both the ocean and lake scenery.

Early morning is another excellent time to visit.

Because Gangneung faces the East Sea, sunrise can be beautiful when the weather is clear.

Best for: Beach walks, couples, families, sunrise, first-time visitors

Recommended time: 2–3 hours

Tip: Visit early in the morning or around sunset if you want fewer people and softer light for photography.

2. Anmok Coffee Street — Coffee With an Ocean View

If there is one place that represents modern Gangneung travel culture, it is Anmok Coffee Street.

The street runs along Anmok Beach and is lined with cafés facing the ocean.

Some are large multi-story cafés with rooftop terraces, while others are smaller independent coffee shops.

The idea is simple:

Buy a coffee, find a seat facing the sea and slow down.

That may not sound like a major tourist attraction, but the combination of cafés and ocean scenery is exactly why so many Koreans visit Gangneung.

Coffee culture has become an important part of the city’s identity, and Gangneung even hosts coffee-related festivals and events.

Anmok is especially nice in the late afternoon.

During the day, you can clearly see the blue East Sea. As the sun begins to disappear, the café lights turn on and the atmosphere becomes much warmer.

If you enjoy photography or café hopping, you could easily spend several hours here.

Best for: Coffee lovers, couples, ocean views, cafés, relaxing travel

Recommended time: 2–3 hours

Tip: Do not choose a café only because it is famous. Walk along the street first and choose the one with the view and atmosphere you actually like.

3. Ojukheon — Experience Traditional Korean History

Gangneung is not only beaches and cafés.

For a completely different experience, visit Ojukheon.

Ojukheon is one of Korea’s most famous historic houses and is closely connected with two important figures in Korean history: Shin Saimdang and her son Yi I, also known by his pen name Yulgok.

If you have seen Korean currency, their names may already be familiar. Shin Saimdang appears on the 50,000 won banknote, while Yi I appears on the 5,000 won note.

That makes Ojukheon especially interesting for international travelers who want to connect Korean history with things they see in everyday life.

The site contains traditional Korean buildings, gardens and cultural exhibitions.

Compared with Gangneung’s beaches, the atmosphere here is peaceful and quiet.

Take your time walking through the grounds rather than treating it as a quick photo stop.

Recommended time: 1–2 hours

Tip: If you are traveling with parents or visitors interested in Korean history, this is one of the best Gangneung attractions to include.

4. Jeongdongjin — One of Korea’s Most Famous Sunrise Destinations

If you are willing to wake up early, visit Jeongdongjin.

Jeongdongjin became famous throughout Korea for its sunrise scenery and for having a railway station located extremely close to the sea.

For many Korean travelers, watching the first sunrise over the East Sea from Jeongdongjin is a classic travel experience.

The area is especially busy around New Year’s Day, when people travel to Korea’s east coast specifically to watch the first sunrise of the year.

But you do not need to visit during a festival.

On a normal morning, the atmosphere can be much more peaceful.

The combination of railway tracks, ocean scenery and sunrise gives Jeongdongjin a character that feels different from Gangneung’s larger beaches.

If waking up before sunrise sounds terrible, you can still visit during the afternoon and enjoy the coastline.

Best for: Sunrise, photography, couples, scenic train travel

Recommended time: 2–3 hours

Tip: Check sunrise time the night before and arrive early enough to find a good viewing position.

5. Seongyojang House — Walk Through a Traditional Korean Residence

Another cultural attraction worth visiting is Gangneung Seongyojang House.

Seongyojang is a large traditional Korean residential complex that gives visitors a look at how an upper-class Korean family lived during the Joseon period.

Traditional wooden buildings, tiled roofs, gardens and courtyards create a completely different atmosphere from modern Gangneung.

What makes Seongyojang interesting is that it feels more like a residence than a royal palace.

You can imagine how families actually moved between different rooms and courtyards.

For photography, spring and autumn are particularly beautiful because the traditional architecture blends naturally with seasonal colors.

If you already enjoyed Jeonju Hanok Village or traditional sites in Gyeongju, Seongyojang is a good addition to your Gangneung itinerary.

Recommended time: 1–2 hours

Tip: Combine Seongyojang with Ojukheon because both attractions fit naturally into the same cultural sightseeing day.

6. Gangneung Jungang Market — Local Food & Traditional Market

A Korea trip is always more interesting when you visit a traditional market.

In Gangneung, that place is Gangneung Jungang Market.

The market is filled with food stalls, seafood, snacks and traditional products.

It is a great place to visit when you want to try several Korean foods without sitting down for one expensive restaurant meal.

Depending on the stall, you can find fried chicken, fish cakes, pancakes, hotteok, seafood and various local snacks.

It is also a good destination when the weather is bad because much of the market area is covered.

Come hungry and walk through the market once before deciding what to eat.

One of my favorite ways to use a Korean market is to buy several small foods and share them rather than ordering one full meal.

Tip: Visit in the late afternoon and turn the market into your dinner.

What Should You Eat in Gangneung?

Gangneung is famous not only for seafood but also for several regional specialties.

Chodang Sundubu

One of Gangneung’s most famous foods is Chodang sundubu.

Sundubu is soft tofu, but Gangneung’s Chodang area is particularly famous for traditional tofu dishes.

Some restaurants serve the tofu simply, allowing you to taste the mild flavor, while others offer spicy tofu stews and modern variations.

If you want one meal that feels uniquely Gangneung, put Chodang sundubu near the top of your list.

Jang Kalguksu

Another local comfort food is jang kalguksu.

Kalguksu means knife-cut noodles.

Gangneung-style versions may use a stronger broth made with Korean fermented seasonings, creating a deeper and slightly spicy flavor compared with ordinary noodle soup.

This is especially good during cold weather.

Since Gangneung faces the East Sea, seafood is an obvious choice.

How to Get to Gangneung From Seoul

Gangneung is relatively easy to reach from Seoul.

For most international travelers, KTX is the simplest option.

Once you arrive in Gangneung, local buses and taxis can take you to the major attractions.

Unlike Jeju Island, you do not absolutely need a rental car.

However, having a car makes it easier to combine places such as Jeongdongjin, beaches and traditional sites without waiting for public transportation.

For a simple two-day itinerary, public transportation plus taxis is completely workable.

Spring — March to May:
Comfortable weather for beaches, historic sites and cafés.

Summer — June to August:
Best for swimming and beach vacations, but also the busiest period.

Autumn — September to November:

Winter — December to February:
Cold, but great for clear ocean scenery, sunrise and warm coffee.

For general sightseeing, I would personally choose spring or autumn.

Final Gangneung Travel Tip

Do not make the mistake of thinking Gangneung is simply another Korean beach city.

The reason Gangneung works so well as a short trip is the variety.

You can experience:

• Ojukheon for Korean history
• Jeongdongjin for sunrise
• Seongyojang for traditional architecture
• Jungang Market for local food

If you have only one day, I would focus on:

Gyeongpo Beach → Chodang Sundubu → Ojukheon → Anmok Coffee Street → Jungang Market

If you have two days, add Jeongdongjin and Seongyojang.

Gangneung is especially good for travelers who have already spent several days in Seoul and want to see a quieter side of South Korea without taking a domestic flight.

You can leave Seoul in the morning and, only a few hours later, be sitting in a café looking directly at the East Sea.

That accessibility, combined with beaches, food and Korean culture, makes Gangneung one of the best short trips from Seoul.
